Why doesn’t everyone in the family get a say in new home or remodeling projects?
According to Susan Fruit, AISD, “Taking into consideration the needs of all the family members is our first step in the remodeling or new home decorating process. And, more and more, the needs of the family pet are taking center stage. I’ve integrated more pet beds, blankies, sofas and dishes in the last year than I’ve done in the 15 previous years I’ve been designing.”
At this year’s New Home and Remodeling Show (June 21st and 22nd at Reliant Center / http://www.ghba.org), Susan Fruit Designs will be featuring the NeoClassic Doghouse by Leifers.
“These aren’t your typical doghouses,” says Kathy Ellis, President of Leifers. “No. These are art for your pet, and your home.”
At 90 pounds, 49” tall and 30” in diameter, these works of art are a perfect accent to home décor — inside or out.
“The emotional connection we have with our homes is powerful, deep, complex. Our home is our personal statement — it’s our personal brand: style, taste, sophistication, priorities, and values,” says Kathy Ellis. Ellis adds, “there are 17 million affluent pet lovers in the US. They want to nurture and indulge their pets, but they do not want silly or ugly things in their houses or yards.”
Leifers is on the forefront of a new retail category called Pethome Furnishings. The company looks to design or develop products that marry two big loves of a person’s life — the love of their home and the love of their pets.
“Taking the family pet into design considerations is smart business,” says Susan Fruit. “With pet home accessories like the NeoClassic, a whole new world of opportunities is opened up.”
American’s spend $41 billion a year on pets. (Business Week, August 2007). This is more than we spend on movies, toys, or video games. It’s also more than the gross domestic product of all but 64 countries.
